Abstract

Four-dimensional potential energy surfaces have been calculated in the asymmetric two-center model for 252Fm, 258Fm, 264Fm, and 236U. Symmetric fission is found to be preferred in 258Fm, consistent with a recent observation; symmetric mass division is strongly preferred in 264Fm. Asymmetric fission is preferred in 252Fm, and in 236U for which the fission path is investigated in more detail. The development of asymmetry in the fission of 236U is described.
