The fusion of heavy ions has captured the interest of many nuclear physicists over the last few years. This renewed interest was caused, on one hand, simply by the increasing availability of heavy-ion accelerators with suitable energy ranges. A deeper motivation, however, lies in the fact that a heavy-ion fusion reaction is one of the most drastic rearrangements that a nuclear many-body system may undergo.
