This paper reviews properties of heavy-ion induced fusion reactions with particular emphasis on systems leading to compound nuclei with A ≲ 50. Results of microscopic calculations of yrast-lines are discussed in some detail. These show that the observed drop of the fusion cross sections below the reaction cross sections at high energies cannot be explained in terms of an yrast-line limitation. Experimental evidence for entrance channel phenomena as well as theoretical models for entrance channel limitations are discussed.
