The soil leaching behaviour of the herbicide metamitron and its main metabolite desamino-metamitron is being studied. To this end, a microlysimeter apparatus was designed for obtaining water samples after percolation through undisturbed soil cores. After various test runs a reliable and highly efficient method was found for determining residues in the low ppb range of both compounds. Analytical steps consisted of solid phase extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography. This method was applied to differentiate between leaching losses and metabolism under varying tillage systems (conventional plough and no-tillage). Smaller leaching losses were found after percolation through no-tillage monoliths. This effect became more distinct when a five fold dosage of metamitron (MET) was applied. Also the breakthrough curves for desamino-metamitron (DAM) indicated higher leaching losses for the soil cores obtained from conventional tillage plots.
