Field trials were conducted in 1991-92 at 2 sites in Hesse (Germany), Ossenheim and Bruchköbel, using 3 different herbicides at recommended concn (isoproturon, terbuthylazine and metamitron) and 3 different soil tillage systems (ploughing, wing-share cultivation and no-tillage). From the analysis of soil collected from 3 depths (0-5, 5-10 and 10-30 cm) 10-91 d after application, isoproturon was found to degrade faster under cultivation or no-tillage when compared to ploughing. In general, herbicide displacement was more probable under ploughing conditions when compared to tillage systems which do not turn over the soil. Following ploughing, terbuthylazine was seen to penetrate in practically undiminished concn to deeper soil layers. Metamitron translocation was decreased and microbial decomposition conditions were found to be more favourable with less aggressive soil tillage systems.
