Abstract: 

Following the model of an integrated concept for nature conservation (PFADENHAUER 1988, 1991), studies on the composition, abundance and distribution of the fauna are an integral part of urban biotope surveys. In contrast to this generally excepted statement, however, faunistic data have received comparatively little attention in recent studies of urban landscapes. This is probably due to the following four problems: 1. Faunistic surveys require a lot of time and money, 2. surveys on the fauna must be selective and thus never cover the total area, 3. well established indicator taxa often lack significance in the urban environment, 4. information from non-urban landscpaes often can only partly be extrapolated to urban habitats. A standardized method involving seven steps for gathering and applying faunistic data is proposed as a method to overcome these shortcomings.
