Abstract
Single crystalline yellow [Yb(NH3)8][Yb(Pyr)6] (Pyr = pyrrolate anion, C4H4N) was obtained by the reaction of ytterbium metal with pyrrole (C4H4NH) in liquid ammonia at −35 °C. Significant excess of ammonia together with avoiding a pyrrole excess prevents formation of the molecular compound [Yb(Pyr)3(PyrH)2(NH3)2]. [Yb(NH3)8][Yb(Pyr)6] consists of two homoleptic ionic units and rapidly decomposes if removed from the ammonia atmosphere, viz. it shows an ammonia vapour pressure >1 bar.
