Abstract:
The present study was performed to assess the energetic value of non-starch-polysaccharides (NSP) for poultry. Therefore, two experiments with chicks, ducks and geese were conducted in which the animals received diets with 13-14% of NSP. The digestibility of NSP and formation of volatile fatty acids were measured. From those parameters, it was calculated that NSP have an available energy of 7.8 kJ/g in chicks, 8.6 kJ/g in ducks, and 8.5 kJ/g in geese. Those values represent approximately half of that given for starch. In conclusion, the study suggests that NSP should be taken into account in the energetic evaluation of feed mixtures for poultry.
