Abstract
In this article, the author critiques the urban sociology developed by sociologists Helmuth Berking and Martina Löw. More specifically, the author utilizes urban history studies to criticize the sociologists' call for focus on the differences between individual cities within their field. He explains how the study of conflicts over public space demonstrate the general symbolic importance of space and place, particularly the conflicts associated with the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, and orthodox churches in Warsaw, Poland. He also discusses the impact of the rise of the daily press on urban identity.
