Abstract
During the 19th century, traditional aspects of a number of trades in the German Rhineland underwent significant changes. The building trade evolved a largely capitalist-speculative character, the economic conditions of butchers, bakers, tailors, shoemakers, and carpenters - particularly the latter groups - were affected in increasing competition with larger-scale manufacturing. Structurally, however, the decreasing distinction between masters and apprentices with the rise of cottage industry acted to erode the divisions that had existed traditionally. Social contact with workers relaxed class distinctions even further. Politically, the revolution of 1848-49 gave impetus to a growing tendency toward unionization and early thoughts of socialist organization.
