Abstract: 
The 37th Annual Conference of the German Association of Agricultural Economists, GeWiSoLa e.V., rook place in Giessen from September 30 to October 2, 1996. The congress theme was ''Markets in Agriculture and the Food Economy - Analysis, Business Strategies, Policy Influences''. This theme is very topical. The 1992 agricultural policy reform in the EU, the GATT decisions on a further liberalization of agricultural markets and the integration of former socialist countries of Middle and Eastern Europe into the world economy imply that marker forces gain in importance on agricultural markers. This Implies that there is an increasing need for price and market analyses. Moreover, it is crucial for farmers and the agribusiness sector to cope with new market risks and to realize new market opportunities in the process of liberalization. New challenges exist for policy too, as the role of government has to be defined and it has to be clarified whether and how government should influence agricultural markets in this period of liberalization. It was the major objective of the Conference to provide answers to these urgent questions. In this article, the contents of the scientific programme of the Conference is reviewed, its outcome is evaluated and successes and open questions for future research are identified.
