Abstract:
The present study was performed to compare the effects of dietary ground and whole flaxseed on laying performance of hens. Therefore, an experiment was carried out with 30 hens which were assigned to three groups and were fed either a control diet or diets with 20 % of ground or whole flaxseed. All the diets were formulated to be isocaloric (11.5 MJ MEN-corr. per kg) and isonitrogenic (17.6 % crude protein).Feed intake and egg weights were not influenced by feeding both, ground or whole flaxseed. Egg production, daily produced egg mass and feed expense per kg egg mass were markedly affected by both, whole and ground flaxseed in comparison to the control diet. In this respect, the effects on laying performance (- 10 % in comparison to control diet) and daily produced egg mass (- 11 %) were similar for ground and whole flaxseed whereas reed expense per kg egg mass was clearly more adversely influenced by whole flaxseed (+ 17 %) than by ground flaxseed (+ 9 %). Therefore, the study shows that whole flaxseed has even more adverse effects on laying performance of hens than ground flaxseed.
