Abstract:
Discusses the relationships between the emergence of the labor movement and the artisan tradition, master craftsmen and workers, and the guilds as the forerunners of trade unions in 19th-century Germany. A comparative review of recent literature illustrates different developments in various trades and regions and it is suggested that the growth of trade unionism was a phase in the development of 19th-century industrial capitalism and that a full explanation of the phenomenon can only be gained through a social history of the working and lower middle classes in Germany at the time.
