Abstract: 

In this paper we explore time banking as a collective consumption based lifestyle movement for organizing locally. Our discussion frames time banking through the emerging literatures on collaborative consumption and lifestyle movements as a collaborative lifestyle movement. This paper further considers the cultural processes of meaning making and practices of framing through which time banks organize, mobilize constituents and entice collective action. In this context, our approach is twofold: firstly concentrating on organizing principle and institutional locus. Secondly, naturally occurring text is interpreted for diagnostic, prognostic and motivational framing. These framing tasks further illuminate the change aimed for in local organizing. The empirical data is collected from time banks in three European metropolitan areas. The findings highlight practices organizing and framing as challenging the commonsense organization and monetary economy. This paper furthers the recent discussions on lifestyle movements engaging in cultural practices that impact everyday actions of their participants in this case of collaborative lifestyles in local communities.
