Na+ Exclusion, H+ Release, and Growth of Two Different Maize Cultivars under NaCl Salinity

Abstract

The effect of NaCl salinity on growth, H+ release and Na+ exclusion of Zea mays cv. Pioneer 3906 and cv. DeKalb XL75 was investigated. Pioneer 3906 was capable of excluding sodium more efficiently from the shoot than DeKalb XL75. This Na+ exclusion was accompanied by a decrease in water status, number of leaves developed, and specific leaf area. H+ release by roots, on the other hand, was not impaired, neither during the long term growth experiment nor in short term experiments. 25 mM NaCl induced a significant enhancement of H+ release at 0.4 mM CaCl2 but not at 4.0 mM CaCl2.
It Is Concluded That Na+ Exclusion In Maize Occurs At Two Different Levels: first, Na+ is excluded at the plasma membranes of root cortical and epidermal cells and second, it is excluded during transport from root to shoot. The former process, unlike the mechanism in barley, appears not to be related to the H+ release by roots.
