Abstract
Based on the sermons of Zeno and Chromatius many scholars became convinced that the Christian communities of Verona and Aquileia were structured differently at the times of the two bishops and had a different status in their cities. The community of Verona looks like a minority-parish, whereas that of Aquileia seems to dominate the religious scenery of its town yet. This opinion disagrees with the results of recent epigraphic and archaeological research. The article examines the perceptions of the parishes by the two bishops, noting that their descriptions show many parallels. The discrepancies which also emerge in their images however are less due to differences in social reality than to the fact that the two bishops - on account of their ethnicity and religious socialization - have different perceptions of the situation as well as of their roles as episcopal leaders and communicate differently with their parishes.
