The essay examines the attitudes towards fear in the political space of classical Athens and late-republican Rome in a comparative manner. It shows structural parallels as well as differences and interprets them in their political, social and cultural contexts. Parallels can be found in the ambivalent attitudes towards fear and in the fields of action in which fear manifests itself in the public space. Significant differences occur in the localization of fear-inducing factors, including the weighting of exogenous and endogenous dangers.
