The present contribution demonstrates that Ignatios’ perception of the ecclesiastical ministry is primarily characterized by his perspective as a prospective martyr as well as his concrete experience of conflict and thus is genuinely situational. It also shows that the conception he operates with neither represents a definable state in the development of the office, nor can adequately be described as a typical example of the understanding of the ecclesiastical ministry in the Greek East.
