Abstract: 

The importance of planar chromatography, particularly thin layer chromatography (TLC), is vastly underestimated. This article highlights the unique attributes of high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) compared with rival column techniques. Two advanced applications in planar chromatography are described to illustrate the potential of this technique: bioactivity-based detection and coupling with mass spectrometry (MS).
