Abstract
Diploneis transylvanica sp. nov, a new diatom species from a Neogene fossil deposit in Kopecz, Romania, is described. The valve morphological features are documented with light and scanning electron microscopy. Diploneis transylvanica was compared with morphologically similar species D. parabudayana, D. alpina, D. budayana and D. hilarula. The most distinct feature of D. transylvanica is the valve outline, elliptical with convex margins and acute ends, which separate it from other morphologically similar Diploneis taxa. Additionally, a formal typification of Navicula hilarula Pantocsek = D. hilarula (Pantocsek) Mills is proposed based on Pantocsek's original drawing and authentic material deposited at the Hungarian Natural History Museum.
