Abstract: 

The common interpretation of abstract expressionism dismisses mutual artistic interests as a decisive dynamic of intercultural understanding. However, the use by official agencies of contemporary painting as an instrument of US cultural foreign policy proved a failure in the late 1940s. In the following years, private artistic institutions promoted American art through European exhibitions stressing displays of individualism and pluralism in which abstract expressionism played a minor role. Yet Europeans developed a marked interest in this movement alone. American abstract expressionism shows travelling in Europe in the late 1950s were highly successful and testified to increased transatlantic cooperation as well as to the "triumph" of this movement in the Western art community.
