Abstract
In the years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 field experiments with Salvia miltiorrhiza were carried out at the research station Gross-Gerau (sand soil) to investigate the effect of different cultivation methods, row spacings/plant densities and harvest times on root yield and content of tanshinones. The highest root yield (24,1 dt DM/ha) was achieved in the autumn harvest in the year of planting with 0.30% of dry matter of tanshinone IIA. The highest content of tanshinones of 0.82% (total) and the lowest root yields were found after overwintering in April 2009 in the second year of growth. The content of tanshinones (cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, tanshinone IIA) was influenced by the harvest time of the sage plant in only one out of two field experiments. Between the cultivation methods, significant differences in root yield were given. The plains cultivation caused significant higher root yields than the ridge cultivation. The effect of the cultivation method on the content of tanshinones was not clear in both experiments. The extension of the row spacing from 50 to 75 cm combined with a doubling of plant density had a significant influence on the content of tanshinones (total) but no effect on the root yield.
