Abstract
Field experiments to investigate the effect of harvest frequency and plant density on leaf yield and caffeoylquinic acids of artichoke were carried out from 2006 to 2008 at the experimental station Gross Gerau, Germany. Artichoke (cv. 'Gobbo di Nizza') was cultivated in a field experiment with two study factors: plant density (4, 8, 12 and 16 plants m(-2)) and harvest frequency i.e. LHF (low harvest frequency with 3 harvests), MHF (medium harvest frequency with 5 harvests) and HHF (high harvest frequency with 6 harvests). The results show that low harvest frequency resulted in highest leaf yield in all years and these went on decreasing with an increase in harvest frequency. Harvest frequency showed an inverse relation with content of CQA (caffeoylquinic acids) in the leaves. Higher leaf yield and CQA content obtained at LHF was induced by longer vegetative growth of the crop leads to better utilization of increased light interception. 8 and 16 plants m(-2) produced higher leaf yield when compared with 4 plants m(-2), whereas contents of CQA compounds were higher with low plant densitiy. Leaf blades showed highest concentration of CQA, whereas minimum concentration of these compounds was observed in artichoke leaf veins. These findings suggest that separation of leaf blades and veins is necessary for getting maximum concentration of polyphenols and is perhaps the reason for higher concentration of CQA obtained in LHF, where veins were lesser when compared with that of MHF and HHF.
