Abstract
From 2006 to 2008 field experiments with artichoke were carried out to investigate the effect of harvest frequency and plant density on the flavonoid content of artichoke leaves. Cultivar 'Gobbo di Nizza' was used in field experiments with four plant densities (4 to 16 plants m(-2)) and three harvest frequencies (three to six harvests). The results showed an inverse relation of harvest frequency to flavonoid concentration. Higher contents of flavonoids were obtained at low harvest frequencies which is due to the longer vegetative growth of the crop leading to a better utilization of increased light interception. Flavonoids showed no clear response to the plant densities used. Leaf blades contained the highest flavonoid concentration, whereas a minimum concentration of these compounds was observed in artichoke leaf veins. From these findings it can be concluded that the separation of the leaves into blades and veins is useful for getting maximum concentrations of flavonoids.
