Abstract
From 2001 to 2003 a field experiment with artichoke as leaf plant for medicinal use was executed in the research station Giessen. In total 15 cultivars and accessions were investigated. In the experiments leaf area index (LAI), leaf yield and chemical compounds in the leaves like CQA components and flavonoids were detected. It was shown that cultivars of the "Cardoon group" reached the highest LAI as well as leaf yields. The concentration of CQA components in the leaves was higher in the first and second experiment year (2001, 2002) and lower in 2003. In the first two experiment years significant differences in CQA concentration in the leaves between the cultivars were observed. Contrary to the other years, in 2003 the concentration of chemical compounds was higher in leaf samples of the second harvest and lower in samples of the first harvest. A positiv correlation between CQA components and total flavonoid concentration was observed.
