Abstract

Anion‐binding catalysis, which is characterized by a neutral or charged catalyst interacting with a negatively charged substrate, has emerged as a powerful method for stereoselective organocatalytic reactions. This chapter collects and emphasizes the structural design elements starting from nature's catalytic systems that can be transferred into small‐molecule catalysts. The exciting story from the first observations of anion‐binding interactions in the 1950s to the first anion‐binding catalysts in the 1990s, and of course contemporary work, is described. The developments of diverse catalyst classes and general activation modes are laid out with representative examples. Finally, we identify the key design elements for substrate activation and asymmetric induction.
