Abstract

Pseu.do.gra.ci.li.ba.cil'lus. (Gr. masc. adj. pseudês false; N.L. masc. n. Gracilibacillus a bacterial genus; N.L. masc. n. Pseudogracilibacillus the false Gracilibacillus).

The genus Pseudogracilibacillus comprises the three species P. auburnensis, P. marinus, and P. endophyticus. Pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the type strains of the species of the genus Pseudogracilibacillus share 95.9–96.5% similarity among each other and 95.4 and 94.3% to Ornithinibacillus contaminans and Sinibacillus soli. In phylogenetic trees calculated based on nearly full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences, the genus Pseudogracilibacillus is monophyletic and forms a distinct cluster within the family Bacillaceae within the order Bacillales. Cells stain Gram-stain-positive or Gram-variable. They can produce spherical to ellipsoidal endospores that are located terminally and sometimes subterminally. Spore formation can be very sparse. Members of the genus are facultatively anaerobic and catalase-negative. They show a varying salt tolerance. The polyamine pattern of the type species consists predominantly of spermidine and spermine. The quinone system consists predominantly of menaquinone MK-7. The polar lipid profile is composed of the major compounds diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. Glycolipids are present. The fatty acid profile comprises mainly iso- and anteiso-branched fatty acids. The diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan is meso-Dpm.

DNA G + C content (mol%): 34–39.1 (HPLC).

Type species: Pseudogracilibacillus auburnensis Glaeser et al. 2014VP.
