Abstract

Co.pro.ther.mo.bac.te.ra.ce'ae. N.L. masc. n. Coprothermobacter type genus of the family; -aceae ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Coprothermobacteraceae the family of Coprothermobacter.

Coprothermobacterota / Coprothermobacteria / Coprothermobacterales / Coprothermobacteraceae

Rod-shaped cells. Stains Gram-negative. Nonmotile. No spore formation. Strictly anaerobic. Thermophilic. Chemoorganotrophs. Proteolytic fermenters that produce acetic acid, H2, and CO2 as the main end products. Able to reduce thiosulfate, but not sulfate, to sulfide. Deep-branching bacterial phylogenetic lineage based on 16S rRNA genes and phylogenomic analyses (see Coprothermobacterota). Coprothermobacteraceae is the only family of the order Coprothermobacterales. The family currently accommodates a single genus, Coprothermobacter.

DNA G+C content (mol%): 42.5–44.8.

Type genus: Coprothermobacter Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993, 858VP.
