Abstract: 

Excessive growth of filamentous bacteria in activated sludge leads to an increase in the sludge volume index up to values over 150 ml/g(bulking sludge) and therefore to poor sedimentation of the sludge. Furthermore, high values of sludge volume index corre late with excessive growth of filamentous bacteria.
