Abstract

Complex samples are rarely screened non-targeted for hazards in routine analysis for a variety of reasons. However, the planar bioassay methodology is ideally suited for sample screening because it is cost-effective, sustainable, and fast. The open-source 2LabsToGo system includes all the steps normally performed in a planar chromatography lab and biology lab and has been shown to produce comparable results to the status quo. For the first time, the detection and evaluation of genotoxic and endocrine-disrupting compounds in food and cosmetics is demonstrated. Environmental samples can also be analyzed as well as samples of unknown or variable composition, complex reaction product or biological material (UVCB), and more than one constituent substance (MOCS). Pure standards are not always pure due to isomers, degradation, or migration from packaging material, which makes planar bioassays also interesting for REACH registrations.
