Ag.ro.coc'cus. Gr. n. agros field or soil; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos grain, seed) coccus; N.L. masc. n. Agrococcus a coccus from soil. Actinobacteria / Actinobacteria / Micrococcales / Microbacteriaceae / Agrococcus Irregular, spherical, ovoid or short rods, 0.7–1.0 µm in diameter and 1.1–1.7 µm in length. Cells occur singly and in pairs, short flexible chains, or small irregular clusters. Nonsporeforming. Gram-stain-positive and nonmotile. Aerobic or microaerobic. Colonies are circular, convex, and smooth; the pigmentation varies between white, cream, yellow, and orange depending on culture conditions. Colony size ranges from 2–7 mm. Catalase-positive; oxidase-negative. DNA G+C content (mol%): 65–75. Type species: Agrococcus jenensis Groth, Schumann, Weiss, Martin and Rainey 1996, 239VP.
