Abstract

Thermophilic actinomycetes are used as indicator-bacteria in bioaerols originating from composting facilities. The standard procedure of analysing is their cultivation on glycerine-arginine- or difco-actinomycete-agar at incubation-temperatures of 50 or 55 degrees C and subsequent counting of grown colony-forming units after 14 days. To evaluate the selectivity of these two selective media for thermophilic actinomycetes, type-strains of some thermophilic Bacillus and Geobacillus species, also frequently found in compost were inoculated and incubated. It could be demonstrated, that some of these strains are culturable on designated selective agars for thermophilic actinomycetes even incubation temperatures of 50 or 55 degrees C. Species of the genera Bacillus and Geobacillus are not actinomycetes, therefore, their growth may result in an overestirration of the true concentration of thermophilic actinomycetes. It can be concluded, that quantitative results must be interpreted very critically in the light of these results.
