Abstract

Ca.vi.i.bac'ter. N.L. fem. n. Cavia generic Latin name for the guinea pig Cavia porcellus; N.L. neut. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Caviibacter, a rod that is isolated from a guinea pig.

Fusobacteria / Fusobacteriia / Fusobacteriales / Leptotrichiaceae / Caviibacter

Rods. Nonspore-forming. Nonmotile. Gram-stain-negative. Pleomorphic. Obligate to aerotolerant anaerobe. Acid is produced from glucose, maltose, trehalose, and salicin. Indole-, oxidase-, and catalase-negative. Colonies are detectable after 24 h at 37°C. Requires blood or serum for growth. Very fastidious; tiny, dry, butyraceous, later smooth, off-white, and nonhemolytic colonies. Flocculent growth without homogenous turbidity in liquid media.

DNA G + C content (mol%): 26.4–26.5 (derived from genomic data [dfgd]).

Type species: Caviibacter abscessus Eisenberg, Glaeser, Ewers, Semmler, Drescher and Kämpfer 2016, 1657VP.
