Abstract

Lep.to.tri.chi.a.ce'ae. N.L. fem. n. Leptotrichia type genus of the family; suff. -aceae ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Leptotrichiaceae the Leptotrichia family.

Fusobacteria / Fusobacteriia / Fusobacteriales / Leptotrichiaceae

The family Leptotrichiaceae is described mainly on the basis of phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of its members. Facultative to obligate anaerobic organisms that stain as Gram-negative rods. All described species are nonmotile and fermentative. Ferment carbohydrates to produce various organic acids including lactic, acetic, formic, or succinic acid depending on the substrate and species. Indole-, cytochrome oxidase-, nitrate-, and urease-negative. Many species are fastidious and require serum, blood, or other nutritional factors for growth (Caviibacter, Leptotrichia hongkongensis, Oceanivirga, Sneathia, and Streptobacillus). Some species have been isolated from human clinical specimens and are pathogenic to humans. Occur on mucous membranes of humans and animals. Comprises the genera Caviibacter, Leptotrichia, Oceanivirga, Sebaldella, Sneathia, and Streptobacillus.

DNA G + C content (%): 25.4–33.5 (derived from genomic data).

Type genus: Leptotrichia Trevisan 1879, 138AL. (Trevisan, 1879).
