This article aims at analysing Antonio and Antoine Blanca’s diary and memories respectively – father and son – written about the experience they had in their republican exile in Algeria. More specifically, it will focus on Antonio Blanca Pérez’s (1910-1984) notebooks, handwritten in different concentration camps
Abstract:
and hospitals in Algeria in 1939, and on Antoine Blanca Crespo’s (1936-2016) works published in different media: his memoirs Itinéraires d´un républicain espagnol [2002] and Les trois voyages d´Abel [2014], as well as his blog. The goal is to illustrate the variable identity axis used by the narrators of each ‘autobiogra-
phies’ – in Ángel Loureiro’s [2000] sense – in their life narrative emplotments. The genre of these accounts of life writing will be discussed and reflected in the light of Hirsch’s concept of ‘post-memory’ [2008], as well as how the poles family (‘filiation’) and politics (‘affiliation’) are articulated, following Sebastian Faber’s understanding of the terms [2014]. The purpose of these endeavours is to dilucidate the similarities and divergences of the identity constructions proposed by the authors in the memories of their family during the
exile in Algeria.
