Abstract: 

On 23 February 2014, thirty-three years after the failed coup d’etat, La Sexta (channel 6) commemorated this event broadcasting the TV show Operación Palace [Operation Palace], a controversial mockumentary suggesting an interpretation of this pivotal day in Spanish democratic narrative that transgresses the official version of the facts. This article examines the means by which the master narrative of the failed coup was constructed, as well as the first signs of its erosion. It then presents the interpretation of the facts provided by Operación Palace, as well as the formal and rhetorical features the show deployed to influence its reception by the audience. Finally, it assesses the short- and long-term reactions to the show in the Spanish press. The article asks whether the show’s potential to undermine the master narrative affected the way the press deals with 23-F.
