Abstract

Out and about: CO2 extrusion from simple α‐keto
carboxylic acids can be used to prepare hitherto unknown
hydroxycarbenes. High‐vacuum flash pyrolysis of oxalic acid or its
monomethyl ester enabled the preparation and characterization of
dihydroxy‐ (1) and hydroxymethoxycarbene, respectively, both of
which are stabilized through π‐type out‐of‐plane and in‐plane
σ conjugation (the HOMO of s‐trans,s‐trans1 is shown).
